Mettupalayam Road runs north from central Coimbatore past the headquarters of Pricol, Ltd. and on to "Ooty" (Udhagamandalam), a distance of about 100km. Most of these pictures were taken from a moving car while I traveled to work each morning.  To view the movie clip below you should have a broadband connection!!!

Rolling along

A pleasant view out the windshield as we drove along.

Building and signboard

There are a lot of gaudy looking signs and buildings along the way. The non-English portion of the lettering is in the Tamil language.

view through the windshield Busses and bikes

Busses seem to challenge one another for a piece of the road as various two-wheeled vehicles also compete.

Vendor with cart

A vendor wheels his hand cart to his destination where he hopes to sell the day's wares.

Quiet street

A quiet spot.

Two on a bike

Sharing a cycle or scooter is common along Mettupalayam Road.

Street View

This view is very near the Alankar Hotel where I stayed.

Traffic builds behind a truck. Drivers seem to take very wild chances in passing.

Mobile TankMobile Tank

Not sure what this is but it is similar to a septic tank pump being pulled by one ox.

Side street

Heading down a side street after leaving the hotel in the morning. Board fences with signage is a common sight. Sidewalks are extremely rare and here there are not any shoulders either.

Folks on the road

India has over a billion people and sometimes it seems like they are all out on the road. Coimbatore is full of textile mills and auto part outlets.

Suburb

This bustling corner is like a small suburb of Coimbatore.

A worker neighborhood

Some parts of town are very nice and some are not so nice. Back behind these buildings are closely packed ramshackle residences.

There are many of these really narrow lanes. Some are lined closely with auto part stores. I walked one of them where there were only stores selling bearings.
